Integrative Cancer Care
There are many terms used to indicate the inclusion of therapies other than chemotherapy and radiation in cancer care. They include alternative, complementary, and integrative. The acronym CAM is often used to represent the term complementary and alternative medicine.
Another term that is sometimes used is medical pluralism. Medical pluralism can be defined as the employment of more than one medical system or the use of both conventional and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for health and illness.
From the below information, the scientific evidence currently available shows that the Hauser family are not alone in their desire to use or to include other methods of treatment for Danny's cancer. It is an increasingly common practice.
The use of an integrative approach to cancer and other conditions is more prevalent in the United States and around the world that many not involved in the field realize. Among the survey results found in a search of the peer reviewed literature available through the National Library of Medicine's PUBMED:
- At a university based tumor treatment clinic in Munich, Germany 52% used at least 1 CAM method, 24% did not use CAM but asked for a consultation.
- Of pedicatric cancer patients surveyed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, overall, 84.5% of the respondents had used CAM, and most of them believed that CAM provided a boost to the immune system, and used CAM with the intention to complement conventional treatment.
- A University of Minnesota study found that 59% of pediatric cancer patients used CAM.
- 97 % of Chinese women with breast cancer use CAM.
- 53% of US women in a national survey use CAM.
- A survey in Germany found that 445 of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia used CAM.
- 78% of women with a increased genetic risk for breast and ovarian cancer used CAM.
- More than 77% of cancer patients in Taiwan use CAM.
- In Turkey more than 44% of patients receiving radiation used CAM.
- In Norway, 37-38% of patients receiving chemotherapy use herbs concurrently.
- 24.5% of pediatric cancer patients in Florida and Delaware use CAM.
- 69% of breast cancer patients surveyed in Chicago used CAM.
- 39% of adult survivors of pediatric cancers use CAM.
- 40% of those interviewed in a national surveyed with a prior cancer diagnosis used CAM.
- 44% of women with lung cancer used CAM.
- 48% of pediactric cancer patients in Turkey use CAM.
- 43% of cancer patients in Anatolia used alternative medicine.
